Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean (January 19, 1946 – August 25, 2026)
Like millions of her fans I'm mourning Dolly today.
For me what sticks out is how she lived. She was a humanitarian. She was a religious person that I looked up to. If there's one church I'd go to, it'd be the church of Dolly.
Because she walked the talk. There's a lifetime to talk about and hopefully we will over the next years. There's a musical coming out about her next Spring. God willing and the creek don't rise, we'll be there.
Right now this one sticks out. Asked by The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 about the wave of anti-trans legislation in her beloved home state of Tennessee, Dolly answered the way she lived: "I've got transgender people. I've got gays. I've got lesbians. I've got drunks. I've got drug addicts, all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge."
And then, in the same breath: "If there's something to be judged, that is God's business. But we are all God's children and how we are is who we are."
And it was never a one-off line...
"If you're the fine Christian that you think you are, why are you judging people?" she told Larry King in 2017. "That's God's job."
I guess what I'd ask a so-called Christian, is, whatever happened to love thy neighbor? Why aren't you like Dolly? Your religion ain't the same as Dolly's.
I've had tears today. But we're gonna celebrate, go to Dollywood.
Rest In Cotton, Dolly
